Santa Rita: Celebration of the Woman of Impossible Cases in Castellammare di Stabia

On May 22nd, in Castellammare di Stabia, the festival dedicated to Santa Rita, known as the woman of impossible cases, is celebrated with fervor.

The heart of devotion towards this saint is found in the Parish of San Matteo in Quisisana, a jewel of faith nestled in the hills of the city. Dating back to the 16th century, this church was commissioned by Robert of Anjou, who ordered the construction of twelve churches in Castellammare di Stabia, each dedicated to an apostle. The veneration of Santa Rita, however, was introduced later by Monsignor Alfredo Santaniello.

Inside the chapel dedicated to Santa Rita, decorated with splendid paintings by maestro Filosa, the votive offerings testify to the graces that the people attribute to the saint.

Faithful from all over the diocese and surrounding towns come to the parish to honor Santa Rita throughout the year. The rose is the distinctive symbol associated with this saint, considered a sign of her love for God and her ability to intercede in impossible cases.

Every Sunday, devotees bring roses to church as a sign of gratitude or to ask for a grace. The devotion to Santa Rita is deeply rooted in Castellammare di Stabia.

On the day of the celebration, a large number of people converge on the parish, coming together with a single purpose and desire: to come to Santa Rita and entrust her with their loved ones, desires and hopes, even if they don’t know each other.
