Reggio Calabria turns magenta for the international day for eosinophilic diseases

Reggio Calabria will also light up magenta on 18 May 2024 on the occasion of the International Day for Eosinophilic Diseases. Palazzo San Giorgio and Piazza Italia will be colored to raise awareness among the population, through a multi-channel approach, on eosinophilic pathologies and, in particular, on eosinophilic esophagitis, a rare conical inflammatory disease which mainly affects the esophagus, seriously affecting the quality of life of patients who they often are unable to feed themselves correctly and continuously. Symbolic places of the city that will join others such as Niagara Falls, the Wisconsin Center, Pier 17 in New York, the Dublin Link Bridge, the Mole Antonelliana and the Teatro Massimo in Palermo.

This afternoon, the Reggio representatives of the Eseo Italia association brought their testimony to the fifth council commission of the Municipality of Reggio Calabria, chaired by Giovanni Latella and responsible for “Social policies, health and healthcare”. It was the nutritional biologists Vincenzo Sofia and Valeria Laganà who explained in detail what these pathologies consist of, what the implications are for those who suffer from them and how to best manage them. One aspect on which the attention of the two biologists was focused was that of early diagnosis. Intercepting the symptoms as soon as possible and intervening is essential to guarantee a better quality of life. It has been explained how the first manifestations of the pathology appear in childhood, between 7 and 10 years. This is why the Eseo Italia association is fighting to increase knowledge and raise public awareness.

«I heartily thank the municipal administration of Reggio Calabria – declared the national president of Eseo Italia, Roberta Giodice – What we are doing is almost a miracle. Sixteen regions have embraced this campaign, 25 monuments will be lit up. We need to make the pathology known, also because, within a few years, the incidence will be greater than celiac disease and other chronic inflammatory intestinal diseases.” A peculiar aspect that Giodice insisted on is the diagnosis, which is only possible following a biopsy: «It is essential to train and raise awareness».

All aspects shared by both the president of the commission, Giovanni Latella, and the president of the municipal council, Enzo Marra, who ensured maximum collaboration from the municipal administration in order to continue along a path of sharing and awareness.

The president of the “Social Policies and Work” Consultation, Marisa Cagliostro, also expressed her willingness to undertake a synergistic activity with the Eseo Italia association. Appointment next May 18th, therefore, with “Let’s illuminate Reggio Calabria by Magenta”
