The remains of the two German soldiers found in Salerno are buried in the Cassino military cemetery. New studies launched – Ondanews.it

They were delivered yesterday morning into the hands of the German Ambassador to Italy, Hans-Dieter Lucasi dog tags of the two soldiers of the axis found bySalerno Association 1943 in November 2022.

The delivery took place at the end of a long bureaucratic work which saw the Association collaborate with the Volksbund (German Commission on War Graves) in the activity necessary to obtain the measures instrumental to the burial of the two soldiers.

The German soldiers found on a hill in front of the sea therefore left the Salerno cemetery to be buried, together with their other comrades, at the Cassino military cemetery under a temporary silent tombstone.

The delivery of the plates, in fact, opens at one new phase of study and research necessary for the identification of the soldiers and the reconstruction of their stories. From a brief analysis, the Volksbund found that the registration numbers do not belong to any missing persons present in the electronic archive. We will therefore proceed through live archival research.

The meeting with the Ambassador was held at the Cassino military memorial, on the sidelines of the event organized by the Volksbund to commemorate the eightieth anniversary of the bloody battle. The Salerno 1943 Association was publicly thanked for its long-standing collaboration with the German authorities.

In addition to the Volksbund medal for the “special services” performed, the Association was awarded the military medal of the Federal Republic of Germany presented to those present by the military attaché on duty at the Embassy.
