Friday 17 May – L’Oscillum CONFERENCE: past and present stories for a new tactile experience

The Oscillum conference will be held on Friday 17 May at 4.30 pm in the Terpsichore Hall of the Town Hall: past and present stories for a new tactile experience.

After a careful restoration and display at the Prada Foundation’s Recycling Beauty exhibition, the Velletri Oscillum will be relocated to the museum rooms.

The conference will be a precious opportunity to discover the restoration and studies conducted on an archaeological find from the Roman period whose reuse in post-ancient contexts, thanks to the dichotomy between form and meaning, led to its conservation.

Below are the speeches of the speakers:

  • Raffaella Silvestri, Director of the Civic Museums of Velletri: Art takes back itself.
  • Alessandro Betori, Archaeological Superintendency Official: Oscilla, meaning and vocation of a singular typology of ancient artefacts.
  • Alessia Salerno, Fondazione Prada and Anna Anguissola, Co-curator of Recycling Beauty Exhibition The language of reuse: the Oscillum at the Prada Foundation in Milan.
  • Giulia Pompa, Restorer, The restoration of the Oscillum.

From 5.45pm, to reflect on the present and future of museums starting from the Oscillum exhibition, the Director will present the project for the new tactile itinerary.

The conference will be opened by institutional greetings from the Mayor of Velletri, Ascanio Cascella, Chiara Ercoli, Councilor for Culture, Simona Baldassarre, Councilor for Culture of the Lazio Region and from the Superintendency of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape for the Metropolitan Area of ​​Rome and the Province of Rieti.

From 6 pm the conference audience will be able to participate in a moment of conviviality and a coffee break in the museum rooms while at 6.15 pm the institutional visit of the museum will follow with a focus on the new location of the Oscillum by the Director.

Free guided tours open to the public will be held at 6.45pm and 7.15pm at the “O.Nardini” Archaeological Museum to discover together the collection preserved in the museum.

Saturday 18 May – MUSEUM NIGHT and ICOM DAY

On the occasion of the European Night of Museums 2024, the Civic Museums of Velletri will open from 5pm to midnight, with a program of activities that will involve the entire public.

The event promoted by the Ministry of Culture aims to spread knowledge of European cultural heritage and identity.

On the same date this year we celebrate Icom Day, dedicated to research and museum education. The Icom, International Council of Museums, deals with the protection of cultural heritage and the development of museums.

at 5.30 pm a guided tour for families at the Archaeological Museum “O. Nardini” in which everyone will be able to get to know some finds first hand but above all have a tactile approach to the plaster copy of the Oscillum, a piece that has just been relocated after the last restoration and presented in the conference the previous day.

The all-round ceramics workshop for children aged 6 and over will take place at 6.30 pm at the Archaeological Museum “O. Nardini.”

At 7 pm the thematic visit The Roman villa: spaces and objects at the Archaeological Museum “O. Nardini”, will lead you to discover the architectural structure of the Roman villa starting from the finds of the Villa Mètabo discovered in Velletri and preserved in the museum.

The day will end with a guided tour at 9pm at the SS archaeological area. Stigmata and at 10pm at the Museum of Geopaleontology and Prehistory of the Alban Hills.
