On the occasion of the next elections for the European Parliament – which will take place on Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 June – Alleanza Verdi Sinistra will be represented in the province of Ragusa by Stefania Pagliazzo, a psychotherapist who has been collaborating with various NGOs in various emergency contexts for years.

With a solid commitment to environmental protection, civil rights, social equity and disarmament for peace, Alleanza Verdi Sinistra advances a progressive vision for the future of Europe. Equipped with vast experience in the social field, in the promotion of peace and in the defense of human rights, Stefania Pagliazzo aims to be an authoritative voice for the province of Ragusa in the European Parliament, promoting political actions aimed at peace and the defense of women’s rights. workers.

Working is a right

The objective is to guarantee everyone a worthy income, but also conditions that allow every day, together with time for rest and personal freedom, a time for the maintenance and care of environments and relationships, overcoming the model sexist division of labor. Not to mention the precarious employment that is still rampant in Italy today, where 8 out of 10 new employment contracts are fixed-term and of these only 1 in 100 lasts more than a year, 3 out of 10 less than a month, 1 in 10 a day. Furthermore, the exploitation of migrants and gangmastering, especially in the south, represent a real plague within the labor market, with organized crime doing a lucrative business at the expense of hundreds of men and women. In the province of Ragusa, where 25% of Italian tomato production is grown in greenhouses, dozens of cases of gangmastering have emerged in recent years, with foreign workers forced to work for up to one euro an hour and to live in dilapidated and terrible sanitary conditions, often without water or heating. This is what happens in the so-called “Transformed Band”, the 80 kilometer long strip of cultivated land between the provinces of Syracuse, Ragusa and Caltanissetta, plagued by exploitative practices, with grueling work shifts, lack of security and episodes of violence and intimidation to the detriment of workers.

“The story of Daouda Diane is, unfortunately, an emblematic case of what happens in our territory” – continues Stefania Pagliazzo – “Daouda is an Ivorian cultural mediator, resident for many years in Acate, who mysteriously disappeared in the summer of 2022 after denouncing the inhuman conditions in which he was forced to work. To this day we still don’t know what happened to him. There are many foreign workers who are exploited and treated without any humanity in our countryside, in our construction sites and in our factories. Europe must give answers and must act concretely.”

Peace and global disarmament

Over the last 10 years, military spending in Europe has increased by 40%, an increase of around 50 billion in the last year alone. The firm repudiation of every war, the tiring and constant work for peace, the right of self-determination of peoples, the non-derogable defense of human rights are the essential references of the international policy of the Alleanza Verdi Sinistra. Italy’s and Europe’s commitment to global peace and security must start from the restoration of multilateral dialogue and a push towards global disarmament. Stopping the shipment of weapons to Ukraine and reopening the path to diplomatic confrontation with determination and conviction are necessary steps to achieve peace. “I am committed to fighting for a more sustainable, just, peaceful and secure Europe” – states Stefania Pagliazzo – “Disarmament and the promotion of peace are fundamental to building a better world for future generations. I want to represent the province of Ragusa with passion and determination, promoting policies that respond to citizens’ needs and contribute to the construction of a more peaceful and just world”.
