With a mortality rate equal to the national average, Sicily is placed at the limit of the yellow zone in the emergency mapping, i.e. the one in which immediately after the white zone are the regions with a less worrying mortality risk compared to the rest of the country . We are talking about a mortality incidence rate per million workers of 6.4, equal to the national average figure.

THE RISK OF DEATH IN SICILY, PROVINCE BY PROVINCE, FROM JANUARY TO MARCH 2024.
To identify the most fragile areas of Italy in terms of workplace safety, the Vega Safety Observatory develops a mapping of the risk with respect to the incidence of mortality.
The yellow zone, the one in which Sicily is located, is the area that groups together the regions with the incidence of mortality at work among the lowest at a national level. At the end of March 2024, the risk of fatal injury in the region is 6.4 deaths per million employed and is equal to the national average.
As regards the incidences, in detail, in the region it turns out that Agrigento, Palermo and Trapani are in the red zone with indices equal to 16.4, 9.0 and 8.2 respectively. While Catania and Messina are in the yellow zone (with an incidence of workplace deaths of 6.3 and 5.7 respectively) and the provinces of Caltanissetta, Enna, Ragusa and Siracusa are in the white zone, all with an incidence of mortality equal to ” zero”.

HEALTH IS THE MOST AFFECTED SECTOR IN SICILY
In 2024, Healthcare is at the top of the ranking of accident reports at work (505), followed by Construction (353) and Wholesale and Retail Trade (329).

WHAT IS THE INCIDENCE OF INJURIES?
The incidence of fatal accidents indicates the number of workers who died while working in a given area (region or province) for every million employed people present in the same area. This index allows us to compare the accident phenomenon between different regions, even though they are characterized by a different working population.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE ZONATION CREATED BY THE VEGA SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENT OBSERVATORY?
The zoning used by the Vega Engineering Safety and Environment Observatory depicts the accident risk in the Italian regions according to the following color scale:
White: regions with an accident incidence lower than 75% of the national average incidence.
Yellow: regions with an accident incidence between 75% of the national average incidence and the national average value.
Orange: regions with an accident incidence between the national average value and 125% of the national average incidence.
Red: regions with an accident incidence higher than 125% of the national average incidence.
