In Italy’s most prestigious cycling race, the Giro d’Italia, each stage is an epic chapter that is written through the efforts of the runners and the landscapes they pass through. The stage, 193 kilometers long and with a difference in altitude of 2,100 metres, offers a variety of challenges to runners, mixing flat sections with challenging ups and downs and twisty climbs. After the first 50 kilometers along the Adriatic, the route winds through rugged terrain, with 10 climbs, four of which are classified as Mountain Grand Prix (GPM). The final ascent towards Monte Giove, just 9 kilometers from the finish line, will put the runners’ legs to the test with gradients exceeding 10%.

Fano

But it’s not just the sporting challenge that makes this stage memorable. Fano, the city of arrival, offers a treasure of culture, history and gastronomy that captures the imagination of visitors. Situated between the hills and the Adriatic, Fano boasts a long history as a seaside town, inhabited by fishermen and sailors for centuries. But it is also a city of art, with ancient monuments and architectural treasures that tell of its rich heritage.

Points of interest include the Arch of Augustus, an icon of ancient Rome that welcomes visitors to the enchanting historic center, and the imposing Augustan Walls that surround the city. The Teatro della Fortuna and the Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta are other unmissable places for anyone visiting Fano, witnesses of its rich artistic and religious tradition.

But Fano is also renowned for its delicious and authentic cuisine. Typical dishes, such as fish broth, fresh clams from the Adriatic and truffles from the hinterland, delight the palates of visitors and represent the culinary soul of this fascinating city.
