Protection, conservation and an online database open to all towns and citizens to find out how many there are and where to visit them. The Region strengthens its commitment to protect and enhance the monumental trees present in Emilia-Romagna with a new directive which redefines in detail the process of care, custody, recognition and possible intervention, continuing along the path traced by the law approved by Legislative Assembly in 2023 after 45 years from the first law on the matter.

There are already 600 – a number that is constantly updated and destined to increase – green giants that live from Piacenza to Rimini, specimens that stand out for their structural characteristics and their rarity in nature, but also for their historical and cultural impact on the territory and the local population.

The new directive establishes that the regional monumental tree (AMR) is intangible and therefore prohibits interventions aimed at modifying the foliage or the root system, unless, after specific authorization from the Region, it is necessary to intervene for reasons of safety.

The rule also establishes a series of naturalistic, landscape, and historical-cultural criteria for the attribution of monumentality to the reported trees, including: the circumference of the trunk, the rarity of the species, the landscape value, as well as historical events cultural that may concern a particular plant.

Fundamental importance was then attributed to the figure of the arborist, specialized in the care and protection of trees, in such a way as to combine their health with safety and public safety.

Finally, a was established official list of monumental trees of Emilia-Romagna, also for their inclusion in an online database that can be consulted with the Moka application “Monumental Trees in Emilia-Romagna”, which provides, in addition to their position, various types of information on their peculiarities. This is to allow all interested towns and citizens to know and be able to visit the regional green giants.
