The Proseccosymbol of Italian wine excellence, has obtained a historic victory on the Prosek, the Croatian wine that attempted to evoke the name of Venetian bubbles. Last April 23, with the publication in the European Official Journal of the new regulation on geographical indicationsthe case “Prosecco against Prosek” has definitively closed, confirming theuniqueness of our wine and limiting the misleading use of the name Prosek.
The EU’s decision was welcomed with great satisfaction by the institutions Italyneither. Luca Zaiapresident of Veneto regionhe has declared: “Prosek dossier closed: this name is ours and no one will ever be able to use it in Europe as a ‘traditional term’ to indicate a wine that only wants to evoke our bubbles, but has nothing Venetian about it.” Zaia recalled that the name Prosek belongs toItaly by decree of 2009 and that the hills of Prosecco of Conegliano Valdobbiadene have been declared a world heritage site byUNESCO in 2019.
The senator Luca De Carlo (Brothers ofItaly), president of IX Senate Commission – Industry, Commerce, Tourism, Agriculture and Agri-food Production, underlined the importance of teamwork between institutions, trade associations and protection consortia for the defence of national products. Also the MEP of Democratic party, Alessandra Morettihighlighted the crucial role of the colleague Paolo De Castro in the Agri commission of the European Parliament.
