Little girl bitten by pitbull, the mayor: “She’s better, but now we need new rules for dangerous dogs”

“First of all we are happy to know that the little girl bitten by pitbull at home be well and that he will recover soon. This is wonderful news that fills our hearts with joy. But the story imposes one serious reflection on the management of dogs considered dangerous. And in light of what happened, I believe that more must be done to prevent episodes of this type.”

These are the words of the mayor of Sesto San Giovanni, Roberto Di Stefanoon the serious incident that occurred yesterday morning, Monday 13 May 2024, in via Picardi, where a two and a half year old girl was attacked and injured by the family pitbull while he was playing with his little twin.

“There are three, in my opinion, tools that could be used to avoid other tragedies: the psychological examination for the dog owner every 3 years, the reinstatement of the list of dangerous breeds and the mandatory license – continued the mayor – After the dramatic attack that took place in Sesto San Giovanni there are no longer any doubts: new rules must be imposed because the current measures provided by law are insufficient. First of all, owners of potentially aggressive dogs need a psychological assessment every three years to prevent breeds such as molossers from falling into the wrong hands. Then it is necessary to restore the list of the most aggressive breeds eliminated in 2007 by the Prodi government. And finally, educational courses with the issuing of a license must be made mandatory for all owners of those dogs considered dangerous.”

Today, in fact, these courses held by the Health Protection Agency are mandatory only for those dogs that have attacked someone.

“But in light of recent episodes we can no longer stand by and watch: it is not enough to punish only after the tragedies have occurred. Prevention must be done. Dogs have always been man’s best friends, but certain breeds, placed in the wrong conditions , they can become real lethal weapons.”
