Cesium 137: the checks did not reveal any particular critical issues

CREMONA – This morning a meeting was held in the Prefecture, chaired by the prefect of the Province of Cremona, Corrado Conforto Galliin order to analyze the situation connected to report received from Acciaieria Arvedi regarding the presence of contamination by Cesium 137 inside the plant on a quantity of treated material, detected through the internal and external radiometric surveillance system.

All the representatives of the interested bodies took part in the meeting of the coordination table: firefighters, Arpa, Ats Val Padana, Municipality of Cremona and Acciaieria Arvedi.

During the meeting the following emerged: the investigations carried out jointly by the ARPA technicians and the firefighters did not highlight any particular critical issues of an environmental or population protection nature; there are no critical issues also recorded in relation to the environmental background values ​​detected inside the plant, outside the delimited areas. However, out of greater caution, Arpa sampled the soil near the towns of Spinadesco and Cavatigozzi in order to exclude any possible concerns; the company represented that the systems for detecting incoming materials have always been functioning and has already carried out checks aimed at evaluating the degree of contamination which confirm what has already been ascertained by the bodies responsible for control. Pending the decisive intervention of specialized companies, it has already secured the materials and dust containers and will monitor and implement the measures already adopted.

The company will monitor the dust samples produced with two daily measurementsthe results of which will be promptly communicated to the relevant bodies and, furthermore, it will arrange for the outgoing dust containers to be subjected to radiometric control via the portal.
