L’Aquila, Inside the restoration. Thursday 16 May a focus on the Church of San Silvestro

THE EAGLE – The first of the project’s events Inside the restoration is reserved for Church of San Silvestroin the focus that the Professor Michele Maccherini dedication to Chapel Branconio Thursday 16 May, at 3pm.

“The Branconio chapel in San Silvestro in L’Aquila presents itself again in its rich colorful guise thanks to the recent restoration. Its fame outside the city, however, is due, more than to the rich livery prepared by Giulio Cesare Bedeschini at the behest of Girolamo Branconio in the first decades of the seventeenth century, to the presence on the altar of Raphael’s Visitation. Although the painting by the Urbino artist left the city in 1655, the memory of him remained indelible in the memory of the people of L’Aquila. On this occasion, rather than retracing the history of an absence, we will try to tell the function of the chapel and the various protagonists of the historical event”.

Thus Professor Maccherini introduces his story of the composition of the Chapel which became the emblem of one of the most powerful families of the new L’Aquila aristocracy, capable of bringing even the divine painter to the city.

San Silvestro is, in addition to the Branconio Chapel, a nucleus of art and works recovered with devotion after the 2009 earthquake. Returned to the community in July 2019, the Church had suffered extensive structural and decorative damage. The pillars that today mark the naves have been reinforced both internally and at the base, the façade re-anchored to its body of the building after a complex kinematic mechanism suffered by the tremors, the frescoes restored with very delicate operations of consolidation, pictorial retouching and assembly of the fabric original pictorial.

And today, in the astonishing harmony of its forms, decorations and light, centuries of devotion and the history and art of the city are retraced.
