RAGUSA – A multi-organ harvest was carried out in recent days from a donor who died due to brain death in the intensive care unit of the Arnas Garibaldi in Catania. This is Salvatore Dugo, originally from Pachino, 41 years old, judicial assistant at the criminal registry of the Ragusa court. The fatal accident occurred in Ragusa following the fatal collision between a minicar and a motorbike, on which Dugo was travelling, arriving in hospital in very serious clinical conditions due to a head injury. Once brain death was confirmed, consent was requested to donate organs to the family. The heart, liver, kidneys, taken and transplanted by Ismett surgeons, and the corneas, taken from the sampling center of the Arnas Garibaldi ophthalmology unit and sent to the Mestre bank, were deemed suitable for transplantation.
It was a particularly delicate and highly complex case, given the young age and the various national emergency requests, as the collaboration of various Arnas Garibaldi Operating Units involved in the organ donation process was requested.
