«Gun in a suitcase» but it is the error of a machine. Flights diverted and delays

An error on the part of a new safety device recently installed at Bologna airport: the car would have scanned a suitcase detecting the silhouette of a gun but in reality it wasn’t there. In the meantime, however, it was already there the alert was triggered which paralyzed Marconi for just over an hour (from approximately 3pm to 4.15pm), causing inconvenience for arriving and departing flights: delays, cancellations and diversion to other airports.

At first it seemed like that Polaria agents had actually found the weapon inside a baggage but subsequent checks ruled it out the actual presence of the gun. Three arriving flights immediately: from Brindisi, Brussels and Stockholm, were diverted to alternative destinations.

The effects on the airport’s air traffic

The airport is back in business after just over an hour of stoppage: all flights scheduled from 2.30 pm onwards they slipped to late afternoon. Several arriving flights were instead diverted to other destinations.
