Fight against environmental crimes, ‘Zero Tolerance’ operation continues. Forum with students from all over Calabria in Catanzaro

Catanzaro – Fight against environmental crimes thanks to inter-institutional synergy and promotion of good practices regarding heritage protection among students with particular emphasis on the professional opportunities that can arise from the valorisation of the territory. This was the objective of the regional forum “We love the environment” which this morning at the Politeama Theater in Catanzaro welcomed around 800 secondary school students from all over Calabria, promoted by the Calabria Region, the Carabinieri Legion, the regional school office and An industry.

“Bringing together the world of schools, universities, Unindustria Calabria, the Calabria Region and then the Carabinieri wants to give the idea of telling these kids: look, you can also study here in Calabria and find work in Calabria. We we want to make it clear that there is truly incredible potential here in Calabria, not only from the point of view of landscape resources, but also from the point of view of human resources, because Calabrian kids certainly have nothing to envy of their peers in everything the country” – declared the commander of the Calabria Carabinieri Legion. Pietro Salsano. “Not only among the population itself, but also among the institutions – he highlighted – there is much more interest, investment opportunities are being created to improve infrastructure, from purifiers to everything related to waste disposal. We are moving forward a lot together with the Calabria Region, with Unindustria with which we have developed relationships at provincial level and with the entire business world to try to understand what their difficulties are in applying the rules, what difficulties they encounter a great development. In my opinion a lot has changed in recent years. I hope that the facts prove me right” – added the general.

There will also be checks this summer. “Last year we carried out the “Wave” operation with the Port Authority, registering 1,400 sites on the Calabrian coast. We checked more or less 250 of them. This year we will start again, but the census is already an existing thing. That is, it is not a “hit and run” operation, and it is an operation that will take years to complete. Unfortunately, many other things are coming to light with our activities that are not right and which in any case date back to 10 or 15 or 20 years ago. so this is something that will take some time but the important thing today is to give these kids and through these kids a message of concrete hope for the future” – concluded Salsano.

Among those present were the prosecutor of Lamezia Terme Francesco Curcio and the acting prosecutor of Catanzaro Vincenzo Capomolla. The vice-president of the regional council Giusi Princi also attended the meeting. While representing the Citadel – also for reasons of opportunity linked to Princi’s candidacy in the European elections – the general director of the Civil Protection department Domenico Costarella spoke. “A synergistic activity – declared Costarella – which saw first of all the desire of our president Roberto Occhiuto to start the “Zero Tolerance” operation which began as an experiment and then became more structural and more organic in the system of contrast and deterrence in the fight against fires but also against pollution. This is the role played by the police and the forestry police for fires they also allow us to verify in real time any hypotheses of crime both at a negligent and malicious level: the presence of the forestry police in the room allows us to evaluate the situations in real time and start any investigations immediately. This has also led to important results last year: we made around 300 reports and raised fines of several hundred thousand euros and this certainly represented added value in the fight. The Control Room is a sort of control tower because the drones – this year there were 30 teams that alternated in shifts during the day – allowed the territory to be monitored and then the images arrived directly in the Control Room. And this was certainly an important value achieved, allowing deterrence but also early sighting and the reduction of intervention times to put out fires more quickly.”
