It’s not so strange to venture that Miguel de Cervantes is a character created by Don chisciotte: another Miguel, de Unamuno, has already done it, to such an extent that his protagonist is alive and powerful, so much so that when he died, at the end of a twelve hundred page novel, drops came out of my eyes like a child’s. You can then induce, by continuing the serious game for just a minute, that Cervantes created his own creator.
Who is it about in this case? Of a father, of a saint, of a deluded person, of a madman, of a sage, of an adventurous knight in already solidly prosaic times? Don chisciotte in fact he is chaste as we imagine a father should be, he is a man of rigorous principles, which we need in the seasickness of fluctuating values, he is someone who speaks with facts and does not just talk. And finally, in an astonishing way, he is the man who better than anyone else knows how to empathize with the problems of others, spread the best practical advice imaginable and comfort with sovereign goodness and wisdom from the ugliest evils.
Unless we talk to him about knight errantry, since then a system of values never realized in history, but which has marked the imagination, not only literary but also moral, for centuries and centuries, is implanted in his mind and heart with absolute power, since he has always possessed within himself this desire for the absolute, which is the pure source of his mystical armed madness. And then no one knows what he might be capable of.
