L’Aquila: the former car park from demolition to redesign

In L’Aquila the interregional public works authority will begin the demolition of the former municipal car park in via Rocco Carabba

As established by the contract, the Municipality will resume work to use the area as a new headquarters for traffic police, civil protection and vehicle storage. The design competition launched by the public reconstruction sector is also in its final phase.

Today the Municipality formally handed over the areas and buildings of the former municipal car park in via Rocco Carabba to the Interregional Superintendency for Public Works, the implementing body for the demolition of the structure damaged by the earthquake.

The operation, which has financial coverage of 3 million euros allocated with the Cipe resolution in 2012, suffered some delays because the district administration was forced to review the economic framework due to the increase in raw material prices. Furthermore, it is necessary to carry out a remediation due to the presence of asbestos on the roof.

The history of the car park and its conversion dates back to the Cialente council which had in mind to create the sole headquarters of the Municipality in the station area, with the exception of Palazzo Margherita, the institutional headquarters. The project was then modified by the current mayor Pierluigi Biondi.

The total resources for the works are 14 million, out of the 40 initially foreseen for the single headquarters. Once the existing building has been demolished, we will be able to start thinking concretely about the first lot: the construction of the new headquarters of the police and civil protection, but also the adaptation of the collector. The subsequent steps will be the construction of the car park buildings and the car parks belonging to the offices and complementary service areas, the arrangement of the entire exterior, the adaptation of the road system and accessibility of the area.

The councilor Vito Colonna, as a heritage sector, handed the area back to the Superintendency, then the public reconstruction will take place, with the deputy mayor Raffaele Daniele who took care of the competition of ideas and planning for the rebirth of the area.

The design competition is already in the final phase. Once the procedures have been completed, the resolution will be issued to formalize the assignment of the task to the winners of the competition, who will have 160 days to design the technical-economic feasibility.
