17 May 2024. Solemnity of San Celestine V in L’Aquila


L’AQUILA – The solemnity of San Celestine V, Co-Patron of the City of L’Aquila and the Archdiocese, has been brought forward to Friday 17 May.

In fact, on Sunday 19 May the Church will celebrate the Solemnity of Pentecost.

Organized by the Archdiocese of L’Aquila in collaboration with the Unesco ICH Perdonanza Celestiniana celebration committee association, the solemnity of the co-patron saint of the Abruzzo capital will take place in the Basilica of S. Maria di Collemaggio where at 6 pm the Coadjutor Archbishop HE Monsignor Antonio D ‘Angelo, will preside at the solemn Holy Mass in honor of Celestine V.

At the end of the Mass there will be the blessing of the bread offered by the volunteers of the canteen of San Celestino V and the delivery of the oil that fuels the candle in front of the sacred relics of the pontiff of the “great Forgiveness”, according to the happy definition of the Bull of indiction of the Jubilee 2025, issued by Pope Francis.

The civil program, curated by the Celestinian Movement includes the traditional procession of the gift of the Cero.

The departure of the procession is scheduled for 4.30 pm in Piazza Santa Maria Paganica, and will wind along Corso Vittorio Emanuele II, the Quattro Cantoni, until reaching the square of the Basilica of Collemaggio. The procession will be made up of flag-wavers, clarions and drummers of the Bandierai dei Quattro Quarti, representatives of the historical group S. Maria Paganica with the gift of oil to San Pietro Celestino, the knights of Celestine with the gift of Bread. Waiting for the procession in the churchyard of the Basilica of Collemaggio are the mayor of L’Aquila and the mayors of all the communities belonging to the Quarto di S. Maria Paganica.
