“What’s going on?”, “Pesticides? Or maybe some bacteria?”. These are, amidst general dismay and alarm, the questions asked by those who found themselves faced with the death of fish this morning in the waters in front of the first crossroads of Viale Delle Dune di San Leone.
Many, washed ashore, stranded on the beach. Others remained floating for a long time. And someone, at a certain point, even collected them and removed them from the shoreline. It is not the first time this has happened along the Agrigento coast. In July 2018, “a massacre” of fish was reported at the mouth of the Akragas River, also in San Leone. Then, there had also been a death of ducks along the stretch of the river that goes from the Maddalusa bridge towards the sea. And there was a lot of concern. Only after months, i.e. in October, the ASP of Agrigento – responding to a parliamentary question – spoke about the presence of the clostridium bacterium, its toxins and the unhealthy waters present in the Akragas river. And the minds of the people of Agrigento this morning ran back to those memories.

It is not clear whether or not some of the dead fish were taken this morning to be entrusted to the veterinary service of the ASP of Agrigento and sent – for the necessary investigations to establish what actually killed them – to the Zooprophylactic Institute of Palermo.
