Administrative elections: in Calabria there will be voting in 132 municipalities

There will be 132 Municipalities in Calabria where on 8 and 9 June there will be a vote for the renewal of the Municipal Councils in the five provinces. Among the most populous are Vibo Valentia, Corigliano Rossano and Gioia Tauro.

In Vibo, competing for the tricolor band will be Roberto Cosentino for the center-right, Enzo Romeo for the center-left, Francesco Muzzupappa for the center pole, and Marcella Murabito for Rifondazione Comunista. In support of Cosentino, six lists – Forza Italia, Fratelli d’Italia, Forza Vibo, Andiamo Oltre, Vibo Unica and Indipendenza; four, however, the lists in support of Romeo – Democratic Party, 5 Star Movement, Progetto Vibo and Progressisti per Vibo. There will be five lists in support of Muzzopappa – Action, Territorial Identity, Heart of Vibo – a free city, Vibo al centro and Insieme al Centro.

In Corigliano Rossano it will be a three-way challenge for the office of mayor – between the outgoing Flavio Stasi for the centre-left, the regional councilor Pasqualina Straface for the centre-right, and the civic figure Domenico Piattello. Eight lists support Stasi: Democratic Party, 5 Star Movement, Green Left Alliance, Future Corigliano Rossano, Azzurro mare, Free City, Clean Corigliano Rossano, United for Stasi mayor. Eight other lists support Straface: Forza Italia, Fratelli d’Italia, Lega, Azione, Uniti per Corigliano Rossano, Città futuro, Movimento del territorial, Civico e Popolare. Only one list for Piattello, political movement Associazione Italia nel cuore.

There are four candidates for mayor Gioia Tauro: Renato Bellofiore, Mariarosaria Russo, Simona Scarcella and Rosario Schiavone. They are all supported by civic lists, with the exception of Scarcella, which is supported by Forza Italia and UDC. Neither the Democratic Party nor the 5 Star Movement presented lists. Gioia Tauro is the most important center in the province of Reggio Calabria affected by the next municipal elections.

No list in three municipalities

Three more should have been added to the 132 municipalities called to vote, in which, however, no list was presented. It’s about San Luca and San Lorenzo – in the province of Reggio Calabria – e Melissa, in the province of Crotone. The three entities will be placed under commissionership.

In San Luca the outgoing mayor, Bruno Bartolo, in office since 2019, has decided not to resubmit his candidacy. He had been elected after a period of administration of the Municipality due to the failure to hold elections due to the lack of candidates for mayor. The outgoing mayor’s disengagement would have been determined exclusively by political reasons.

In San Lorenzo – as far as we have learned – the municipal elections should have taken place because two mayoral candidates had been found – Lorenzo Spizzica and Giuseppe Minella – but both withdrew their candidacy within a few hours. The Municipality, therefore, will continue to be managed by a prefectural commission, already active after the mass resignation of the councilors last year, under the leadership of the mayor Giuseppe Floccari.

To Melissa the electoral round is skipped as no list was presented. The candidates for mayor – the outgoing Raffaele Falbo and the challenger Edoardo Rosati, and their coalitions – had the lists ready, but preferred not to hand them over due to the situation of uncertainty weighing on the future of the Municipality due to the possible dissolution due to infiltration mafia. In fact, last May 8th, the deadline for the activities of the Anti-Mafia Access Commission expired which on November 9th 2023 was installed by the prefect of Crotone following the investigation that involved the current mayor Falbo on trial for extortion aggravated by the desire to facilitate the associates of the Cirò gang. The activity of the access commission concluded on the eve of the presentation of the lists and it will take at least three months to know the outcome of the procedure as provided for in paragraph 2 of article 143 of the consolidated law on local authorities. Therefore, any dissolution would still involve the Municipality of Melissa even if a new municipal administration is in office. For this reason, the two groups decided not to present the lists, effectively anticipating the institution’s administration.
