REGGIO CALABRIA The Metropolitan City of Reggio Calabria was present at the IV Conference of the National Institute for the Deaf and Mute (Ens), on the occasion of the 82nd anniversary of the promulgation of the law for its recognition. Mayor Giuseppe Falcomatàin greeting the national president Ens, Angelo Raffaele Cagnazzo, and the representatives of the organization at all levels, recalled the commitment of the metropolitan administration for people with disabilities and, in particular, the relationship of strong sharing and collaboration with the association committed to the protection and safeguarding of rights of deaf people. In recalling the battles, struggles and sacrifices faced by the deaf and dumb over the last 82 years, the mayor underlined the courtesy and extraordinary sensitivity of those who always face every problem with a smilethe lightness, the conviction and the determination to be able to transform an element of difficulty into an element of strength.
A memorandum of understanding was approved with the Ens
In recent weeks, Mayor Falcomatà has decided, together with the council of Palazzo Alvaro, a memorandum of understanding with the ENS through which, thanks to a project financed for 30 thousand euros, distances are shortened and deaf people are guaranteed the opportunity to participate in political and institutional life in full compliance with the principle of equality enshrined in Article 3 of the Constitution. Specifically, the mayor underlined, «the project allows the 97 mayors of the Metropolitan City to be able to make use of an interpreter in the Lis language during municipal council meetings and, as far as the individual citizen is concerned, to be assisted by a translator in hospitals or public offices. In short, a first step on a path that must increasingly see institutions alongside the claims and problems of people with hearing disabilities.”
