CINEY – Italy was a great protagonist at the European Master Team Championships: on Ciney’s Saturday two gold medals arrived for the Italian team with the women’s Veterani sword team and the Grandi Veterani men’s foil team, but also silver for the men’s Veterani sabre. Italy thus rises to the top of the medal table with 9 medals (3 gold, 5 silver and one bronze).
Triumph for the Veterans sword training with Federica Ariaudo, Ewa Borowa, Francesca Boscarelli, Barbara Gabella and Laura Lotti. Italy started the day with a 45-21 win against Norway. In the quarter-finals another large victory for the Italians who got the better of Austria with a score of 45-19. The team, followed by referee Adoflo Fantoni, beat Sweden 45-36 in the semifinals, thus reaching the gold medal match. In the final act, in a point-to-point match, Italy prevailed over France 45-43, thus climbing onto the first step of the podium.
The Italian Grandi Veterani men’s foil team won all their matches in the group stage, thus entering directly into the semi-finals. The team made up of Massimo Accorsi, Marco Bosio, Fabrizio Capellini, Fabio Miraldi and Giulio Paroli beat France 45-34 in an assault conducted from the fifth quarter until the end. Heart-pounding final for the Azzurri led by Paolo Bottari who in the final prevailed with the last shot against Hungary 42-41, thus climbing onto the first step of the podium.
The great day was marked by silver for the Italian Veterans of the men’s sabre. The quintet composed of Roberto Amalfitano, Oliver Emmerich, Paolo Gay, Stefano Lanciotti and Lorenzo Morretta, leading after the group stage, comprehensively beat France with a score of 45-24. In the final, the team followed closely by Giovanni Sirovich, was beaten by Hungary 45-38, climbing onto the second step of the podium.
Tomorrow the fourth and final day of racing in Ciney. From 8 on the platform the Great Veterans men’s épée team (Cosimo Ferro, Giuseppe Amedeo Marino, Fabio Perucchetti, Giuliano Pianca, Federico Strano) and the Great Veterans women’s foil team (Gianna Cirillo, Maria Franca Col, Gianna Della Corte, Iris Gardini and Liqin Wei). The Veterani women’s saber closes the European Master Team Championships with Daniela Colaiacomo, Veronica De Cicco, Costanza Drigo, Martina Giannecchini and Gabriella Lo Muzio.
