Florence found itself catapulted into 1874 to recall the birth of the historic market
It started from Piazza della Signoria the historical procession for the re-enactment of the inauguration ceremony of the Historic Central Market, 150 years after its birth.
This morning the procession paraded through the streets of the center and the San Lorenzo market amidst applause, selfies and a lot of curiosity. Hundreds of people attended the procession led by the president of the Consortium of the Historic Central Market Massimo Manetti, the historians Luciano and Ricciardo Artusi and the councilor of the Municipality of Florence Mirco Dinamo Rufilli. At 11 o’clock, from Piazza della Signoria, the procession passed through via dei Calzaiuoli, piazza San Giovanni, Borgo San Lorenzo, piazza San Lorenzo, via dell’Ariento to arrive at the Historic Central Market where the ribbon cutting commemorative ceremony was held, just as happened in 1874 on the occasion of the inauguration.
Florence found itself catapulted into 1874 with a historical procession in Garibaldi costumes, organized by the Flag Wavers and Musicians of the Signoria association, and a performance of dances to music of the time by the Compagnia della Bizzarria d’Amore.
150 years have passed since, for the first time, the structure, built to a design by Giuseppe Mengoni, opened its doors to the Florentines with theInternational Agricultural Exhibition. “Since then, generations of traders have carried forward passion, experience and tradition – underlines Manetti – And if we are what we are today it is thanks to all the people who work at the Historic Central Market”.
