Asti, Massaia hospital, national headache week: doors open to the Headache Centre

Canelli. Migraines affect approximately 20% of the population living in industrialized countries and women are more affected. The pathology, a source of limitations for social and working life, is underestimated and often not adequately considered. The “National Headache Week” which takes place this year from 13 to 19 May is shining the spotlight on the topic.

On this occasion the doctors of the Cardinal Massaia Headache Center – the director Marco Aguggia with colleagues Annalisa Gai and Erica Gallo – will meet the patients to offer indications on the appearance, management and treatment of the different forms of cranial pain and to respond to specific questions.

The meetings will take place on Friday 17th (10am-12pm and 3pm-5pm), Saturday 18th (10am-12pm and 3pm-5pm) and Sunday 19th May (10am-12pm) at the Neurology Day Hospital clinic (floor 1).

To guarantee a personalized response to questions, the team invites you to contact Neurology on 0141-487510 or by email at [email protected]: the professional nurses Linda Lionetto and Loredana Cuozzo will provide useful information for appointment.

«Headaches are a frequent reason for seeking emergency room treatment – they explain at the Headache Center – on the other hand, since it is also a common symptom, it is often considered a transitory disorder that goes away with a simple analgesic. In this way, however, a tendency towards its chronicity and the possible development of uncontrolled pharmacological abuse is triggered. Only through constant and widespread information do we believe it is possible to manage the symptom which, at least once in a lifetime, has affected and still affects each of us”concludes the team.

The social recognition of chronic headaches has had and is having a path in national legislation, thanks to the work carried out by patient associations and the commitment of scientific societies. At the same time, there has been a clear improvement in recent years from a therapeutic point of view.

The Headache Center of the Cardinal Massaia hospital was awarded the Pink Sticker for the attention paid to the female sex and is recognized among the centers at national level. Here, in addition to the usual standard pharmacological therapies, cutting-edge treatments for complex chronic headaches are used. Among the therapeutic strategies we highlight: botulinum toxin, monoclonal antibodies, selective analgesic blocks in acute and chronic forms. Furthermore, headaches, migraines and neuralgia are regularly treated with personalized acupuncture cycles.

On May 27th, on the occasion of Migraine Awareness Day promoted by the Onda Foundation, the Headache Center will once again be available to the public with an “Open Door” at the Neurology clinics, from 10am to 12pm and from 3pm to 5pm.
