Naples (by Tommasina Casale) – In his recent live broadcast on Facebook, the governor of Campania, Vincenzo De Luca, launched shameful insults against Father Maurizio Patriciello, a heroic priest from Caivano, known for his fight against the Camorra and for his commitment to protecting young people from crime and drugs. Defining Father Maurizio as the “Pippo Baudo of the northern area of Naples” was a gesture of total lack of respect towards an individual who risks his life daily to defend the community. Even without naming him directly, it was clear that De Luca was aiming for him. Giorgia Meloni’s response highlighted how out of place the governor’s comment was: “Father Maurizio lives under guard due to threats from the Camorra, and instead of being supported and encouraged by the institutions, he is publicly mocked. This behavior is not only shameful, but sends a frightening signal to those fighting organized crime.” Father Maurizio’s response, through a post on Facebook, was dignified and touching. He expressed his disappointment at the insults he received, but also showed a strong determination to continue his mission despite adversity. Father Maurizio’s words remind us of the importance of supporting those who fight crime and defend the common good. It’s time for institutions to come together to protect and honor those who risk their lives for the good of others.
