In the Lucanian capital, administrative elections will be held on 8 and 9 June to choose the next mayor. Four men and one woman are running, supported by 17 lists. They are, in alphabetical order: Francesco Fanelli (centre-right extended to Azione and Italia Viva), Francesco Giuzio (Basilicata Possibile), Maria Grazia Marino (Forza del Popolo), Pierluigi Smaldone (Potenza Ritorna with the support of the M5S), Vincenzo Telesca (supported from various civic lists and from the majority of the Democratic Party, but without the dem symbol)

There are five candidates for the office of mayor in Potenza, where municipal elections will be held on 8 and 9 June: four men and one woman, supported by 17 lists. The candidates, in alphabetical order, are: Francesco Fanelli, Francesco Giuzio, Maria Grazia Marino, Pierluigi Smaldone, Vincenzo Telesca.

Who are the mayoral candidates in Potenza

Francesco Fanelli, of the League, is the vice-president of the outgoing regional council: he is the candidate of the centre-right extended to Action and Italia Viva. He is supported by seven lists: Fratelli d’Italia, Forza Italia, Lega, Noi Moderati, Potenza civica-Fanelli mayor, Insieme per Potenza-Amiamo Potenza, Orgoglio Lucano. Then there is the centre-left exponent in the running Francesco Giuzio, outgoing city councilor: he is supported by the Basilicata Possibile list. The only woman competing for the mayor’s seat is Maria Grazia Marino, supported by Forza del Popolo. Among the aspiring first citizens there is also Pierluigi Smaldone: exponent of the centre-left and outgoing city councilor, supported by Potenza Ritorna, M5S and Città nuova. Finally, the last name in the running is that of another exponent of the center-left and outgoing city councilor: Vincenzo Telesca. He is supported by various civic lists and by the majority of the Democratic Party but, due to the split in the party, the Dem symbol will not be present on the ballot paper. Supporting him are: Let’s unite for Potenza-Telesca mayor, The Power of Citizens-democratic Power, Together for Potenza, Basilicata Casa Comune, Potenza prima.

The municipal elections

Potenza is the only one of the 52 Lucanian municipalities where on 8 and 9 June there will be voting with the double-round system: it has around 65 thousand inhabitants, while all the others have a population of less than 15 thousand inhabitants. In 2019, in the Lucanian capital the municipal elections were won in the run-off by Mario Guarente (Lega) over Valerio Tramutoli (Basilicata Possibile), with a difference of 200 votes (16,248 to 16,048).
