Good news for those who missed the spectacle of the Northern Lights yesterday, the astronomical event that colored the skies of many regions of the Center (including the Marche, in Gabicce Mare) and Northern Italy red and pink. The incredible phenomenon can in fact also be seen this evening. But from what time and above all, in which regions of Italy?

When to see it

Experts recommend aiming for eyes towards the sky from 10pm. But be careful: this is not an entirely predictable and constant phenomenon. For this reason, all you have to do is sit patiently and wait, because the luminescence could suddenly explode.

Where to see it from

And what are the privileged points? Obviously those far from sources of light pollution: mountains, open countryside, beach. «The important thing is to focus your eyes towards the north», explains Giorgio Bartolini of the Lamma consortium, Environmental Monitoring and Modeling Laboratory.

Yesterday the skies turned red from Rome to Venice. In all the Northern and Central regions the astronomical spectacle could also be seen with the naked eye, with various sightings also in Abruzzo. Experts predict that the show will recur in the same regions again this evening.

Because we managed to see it in Italy

According to scientists, the phenomenon of the polar auroras is generally visible at high latitudes, especially in the areas of the Arctic Circle. But why then were we able to see it in Italy yesterday too? As explained by the Cnr, «in the presence of strong solar activity the quantity of particles that reaches the Earth’s magnetosphere is such that occasionally the “magnetic storm” can also reach the middle latitudes, and in situations of exceptional activity of the Sun the Aurora can arrive to the borders of Italy”.
