The Northern Lights immortalized by many shots in Romagna are breathtaking. Thrilling. An optical phenomenon that could repeat itself tonight, Saturday 11 May. A rare event in our latitudes caused by the interaction between the solar wind and the Earth’s magnetosphere.
Called “stable auroral red arches” by astronomers, it derives from a form of “excitation” of the oxygen and nitrogen atoms, i.e. the main gases that make up the atmosphere, caused by the so-called solar wind, i.e. a flow of electrically charged particles that reaches the earth and comes into contact with the ionosphere moving along the lines of the earth’s magnetic field.
Here are some shots collected by Emilia-Romagna Meteo and Meteo Pedemontana Forlì.
