The mayor of Naples said it Gaetano Manfredi talking about the latest episodes of violence in Naples. Manfredi, on the sidelines of the conclusion of the two days on social issues with the visit of the mayor of Bologna, Matteo Lepore, to Naples, underlined that “We need more police presence in the cities, especially more presence at night, when the cities are not patrolled. We need more men on the streets and this is the responsibility of the national government, we hope that the voice of the mayors who then also become the targets of criticism even on issues for which they have no competence will be heard. In this period there is also urban violence which sometimes occurs even during daylight hours. We have now intervened on this with a large investment in cameras, because we believe that control is not only physical but also done by a very strong intelligent camera system in the area, which certainly helps to control the city”. On safety, the mayor of Bologna Lepore underlines how “it comes from the men of the police – he said – and mayors cannot be asked to be sheriffs, moreover without the resources to do so. Therefore, the Ministry of the Interior needs to adopt adequate resources in cities like Naples and Bologna. In Bologna we now have a significant growth in tourists, visitors and also residents. So every day in our city there are not only residents, but there are almost double the inhabitants and the police forces remain the same, in fact they decrease. I believe that the Ministry of the Interior must look more carefully at what the real life of cities is”.
