On the Stelvio The avalanche danger is too high to let the caravan pass through Tour of Italy. He stated this to ANSA Olaf Reinstadler, President of the local avalanche commission. The passage to Cima Coppi at 2,757 meters with its 48 hairpin bends is scheduled for May 21st.

For days, the road service of the Province of Bolzano has been working to free the road from snow with cutters and mechanical shovels. “The problem though – Reinstadler specifies – it is not the road, but the slopes above are, which are still full of snow and with the high temperatures of these days spontaneous releases can occur”. “Moreover, the passage of the caravan takes up a lot of time”, he adds.

No official statement from the organizers of the Giro d’Italia following the news of the danger of avalanches on the Stelvio, 11 days after the date of the May 21st stage. A choice will be made close to the stage, based on the development of the climatic conditions and the suggestions of the technicians. The leaders of RCS Sport, with Giro director Mauro Vegni in the lead, are clearly monitoring the situation, as per practice, with the priority of ensuring safety for all participants in the race and in the caravan.
