job opportunities for young people; final phase of the “On board” project

Large participation, this morning at 12, in the Council Room of the municipality of Massa, for the final event of the “On board!” project. born from a need shared by the municipality of Massa and managers involved in the nautical sector, based on the presence in Massa of prestigious nautical companies that have gained fame and a guarantee of reliability in the world, as well as the extremely negligible circumstance as ascertained on the based on tangible ISTAT data, that young people looking for work do not seem to take into consideration this important job opportunity in the nautical sector. From this it follows that many companies complain about the real lack of young residents to be included in the sector in question, both in technical and managerial roles. The objective of the municipality of Massa and the AREA foundation, in giving impetus to such a project – opportunity aimed at all secondary schools, was precisely to create a sort of support network capable of stimulating young citizens to enhance the knowledge and skills acquired, remaining in the area. During the process, which began in November 2023 and lasted six months, a series of inclusive strategies were defined aimed at bridging the gap between young people, institutions and the job market. The process in question therefore involved young people, representatives of institutions, managers of the nautical sector, experts in youth policies, local educational institutions and representatives of the world of associations and was divided into several phases. The first phase was carried out in collaboration with the secondary schools of the municipality of Massa and various youth groups and took the form of a listening and participation process carried out in schools and in the main meeting places. The aim was to intercept expectations, needs and also any fears and reservations of the young people of Massa. The second phase was a real investigation carried out within the nautical companies whose outcome was then compared with what was found within the schools. Subsequently, during the third phase, discussion tables were set up involving managers from the nautical sector, experts in youth policies and representatives of local institutions aimed essentially at understanding and evaluating all those communication strategies at an institutional level and therefore, to understand the roots of the low participation of young people.

“I thank all the participants in the project – said the mayor of Massa Francesco Persiani – and in particular, two fundamental protagonists of this journey. The first thanks goes to the University of Pisa in the person of the professor Serena Gianfaldoni who coordinated this project which touched the nautical sector within schools and who will outline the final report here. The second thanks goes to Paolo Tazzini, CEO Founder Yachtalia and Captain. The fate of you young people, of your future, is particularly important to us because I believe that the important thing at your age, that you are following an educational path and are slowly approaching the world of work and making important decisions, is to give yourself opportunities and instill and make you acquire awareness in order to understand what awaits you outside of school, on a professional level and in terms of work occupations. So the aim of the municipal administration as an institution was precisely to talk to you about something that could be a cognitive experience of the nautical sector for you. This is not the final phase of the journey but only a beginning because what we will learn and have learned thanks to the participation of the university and those who work in this specific sector and therefore to the experience that is brought within the school walls, will allow us to better understand how to act towards you and therefore evaluate whether to give impetus to certain further activities and insights, whether there is a need to support and involve other companies as well to allow you to evaluate the possibility of carrying out this work in the future if you like it”
