From today until tomorrow at noon, the Municipalities of Calabria are preparing to present their lists for the local elections on 8 and 9 June. This is a crucial moment, with the final negotiations underway before making the candidates official. This process marks the start of the countdown for a third of the region’s municipalities to be involved in the electoral process.

In Calabria, only one provincial capital, Vibo Valentia, and three municipalities with a population exceeding 15,000 inhabitants – Corigliano Rossano and Montalto Uffugo in the province of Cosenza, and Gioia Tauro in the province of Reggio Calabria – will see the possibility of a possible shift of ballot. These four municipalities, therefore, find themselves at the center of attention for the next elections.

However, among the cities called to the polls, the San Luca “case” still remains open, with pending issues and negotiations that add further tension to the electoral process. The imminent deadline for the submission of lists adds particular urgency to the ongoing discussions.

With the start of the presentation of the lists, the foundations are laid for a political confrontation that will have a significant impact on the future of numerous Calabrian municipalities.

Where to vote

In province of Catanzaro we will vote in 19 Municipalities: Albi, Amato, Cortale, Fossato Serralta, Gagliato, Gimigliano, Marcedusa, Marcellinara, Miglierina, Motta Santa Lucia, Pentone, Pianopoli, San Floro, San Floro, San Pietro a Maida, Sellia, Sellia Marina, Sorbo San Basile, Squillace, Zagarise. In province of Crotone the Municipalities will be held in Belvedere di Spinello, Caccuri, Carfizzi, Castelsilano, Melissa, Mesoraca, San Mauro Marchesato, San Nicola dell’Alto, Strongoli, Umbriatico Verzino. In the Metropolitan City of Reggio Calabria There are 27 municipalities called to vote on 8 and 9 June: Agnana Calabra, Ardore, Bagaladi, Benestare, Bivongi, Bova Marina, Canolo, Cardeto, Cittanova, Feroleto della Chiesa, Gerace, Gioia Tauro, Laureana di Borrello, Martone, Monasterace, Oppido Mamertina, Portigliola, Riace, Rizziconi, Roccella Ionica, San Giovanni di Gerace, San Lorenzo, San Luca, Sant’Alessio in Aspromonte, Sant’Ilario dello Ionio, Scido, Stignano. In province of Vibo Valentia Administrative offices in 13 Municipalities: Drapia, Mileto, Mongiana, Nicotera, Pizzoni, Rombiolo, Simbario, Sorianello, Soriano Calabro, Vallelonga, Vibo Valentia, Zungri.

Two municipalities, Soriano in the province of Vibo Valentia and Portigliola in the province of Reggio Calabria, are preparing to face the vote after the end of the period of administration due to the dissolution due to mafia infiltration. However, the situation also presents peculiar challenges elsewhere: the cases of Mileto and Nicotera, in the Vibo area, highlight a complex context. In these two municipalities, the vote takes place at the same time as the establishment of a prefectural access commission, tasked with investigating any mafia infiltration.

Furthermore, the situation remains uncertain for the Municipality of San Luca, where the risk of a new commissioner persists due to the lack of candidates and lists. However, in the last few hours, there have been rumors of the possibility of developments that could change this scenario.
