TARANTO – In the cemetery of San Brunone in Taranto he is known as “the General”, “the powerful” and even “the son of God”. Giuseppe Cristello, born in 1968, is one of the undertakers who work in the cemetery under the chimneys of the former Ilva in the Tamburi district, but his name scares everyone.
On 27 December he was arrested in the Golden System investigation of the Flying Squad which brought to light the racket imposed on the families of the deceased, funeral agencies, florists, marble workers and all those who used cemetery services: everyone had to pay “the coffee” to bury a body or to see any activity carried out quickly and correctly.
A few months ago he was the only one to end up in prison on charges of having led a real criminal association which, thanks to his closeness to major exponents of local crime, had transformed the cemetery into “their thing”.
In recent days, however, a new judicial tile has fallen on the head of the 56-year-old defended by the lawyer Andrea Maggio, and on that of five other suspects, all linked to the “Dr Multiservice” company, the company that managed the cemetery services until 2021 when the contract was awarded to Kratos.
Fraud against the state, extortion and injuries are the accusations formulated in various capacities by the public prosecutor Francesco Ciardo who in recent weeks notified the notice of conclusion of the «San Brunone» investigation…
