Bergamo, Libdem and Italia Migliore with Saffioti (and Pezzotta): «Carnevali focuses too much on assistance»

“The liberal world cannot be represented by these forces.” In the case of the Bergamo local elections, the “forces” to which he refers Giuseppe Bassi, provincial representative of the European Liberal Democratsare those on the center left who support the candidate for mayor Elena Carnevali. A positioning opposite to that of Libdem and Italia Migliore which, as is known, they will support with a chosen ad personam Carlo Saffiotileader of Forza Italia and next deputy mayor if Andrea Pezzotta for the center-right wins the elections.

«We didn’t ask for anything – says Bassi -. We are convinced that we can offer substantial content in many sectors, to make Bergamo progress and make it truly European, not just in words.” However, Bassi specifies: “We are dissatisfied with both the left and the right.” And he doesn’t go into the merits of the choices of Action and Italia Viva (the latter party with the two groups supports the United States of Europe list at the European elections), with whom they had worked to present their own candidate for mayor in Bergamo. A plan that ran aground after the choice of former third party colleagues to support Elena Carnevali. «In March it was too late to present a list, the possibility was to find a candidate who, due to his authority and clarity of thought, was available to support our program, more aimed at the productive classes».

On the merits, here is a criticism of Carnevali: «His proposals are based on assistance and subsidiarity. We also need to encourage people to work.” It is more stinging instead, in its thrust, Matteo Saponaro of Italia Migliore: «We wanted to offer a proposal with civic, moderate, liberal-democratic and reformist characteristics far from populism and extremism. And it’s no secret that for much of the third pole table the identikit of the ideal candidate was Carlo Saffioti.” Saponaro is clear: «You cannot demonize a generic right. But isn’t it the same right with which the Democratic Party governs the Province?”. A difference in judgment dictated by “puerile motivations and personal ambitions”. For its part, Carlo Saffioti he notes another inconsistency: «The moment he chose one of the two poles, he stopped being the third pole. We are faced with a centre-left-left, with sensitivities different from ours.” Saffioti will be “intransigent in the affirmation of values” but “available for discussion, to find the solutions that best respond to citizens’ needs”. For Andrea Pezzotta the choice of Libdem and Italia Migliore “is absolutely logical by virtue of the values they express”.
