The fight against illegal trading continues to be a priority for the municipal administration. This is demonstrated by the latest operation conducted by the Local Police directed by the commander Antonio Piricelli which, yesterday, carried out checks both in the areas in front of the Royal Palace and in the Belvedere area of San Leucio. Undercover officers also intervened in the shadow of the two UNESCO heritage sites. When the police arrived, the illegal sellers abandoned their merchandise and fled and so it was not possible to identify them. In the double seizure carried out, 318 bracelets and 112 necklaces of various types and materials, 215 magnets of different manufacture, 31 toy lasers, 131 glasses and 18 rubber balls were stolen from the sellers.

An operation that follows the one carried out last weekend when around a hundred pairs of glasses were seized. The range of action of the local police officers then extended beyond the border of Piazza Carlo di Borbone with checks carried out in Via Vivaldi and in the area of the riding tracks where the phenomenon of wild parking is widespread. There were 64 reports recorded in the morning.

The operation falls within the ordinary control services as the commander recognizes: «The problem – says Piricelli – is the staff which is too decimated to guarantee daily coverage of all needs. Despite this organizational gap we are managing to respond as best as possible to all the needs of the city and we will continue to work in this way in the coming months to protect legal trade and all those operators who regularly pay taxes and contributions”.

The local police operation reopens a problem, that of illegal trade near tourist sites, also addressed by city politics. A sort of recovery of illegal workers is what he proposes Pasquale Napoletano of Fratelli d’Italia who appreciates the attempt to guarantee serious and effective control of legality in the city. «Years ago we also tried to dialogue with the Royal Palace to coordinate an action that would have allowed us to restore working dignity to those who today are defined as illegal workers – he says – perhaps taking up the idea of the kiosks for tourists in Piazza Carlo di Borbone. The commitment of the local police in controlling our territory and repressing the criminal phenomena that occur in the city is positive. It is incredible, however, that after so many years there is no desire to address and resolve a real social problem, such as that of squatters and their families, which someone must seriously start thinking about in order to guarantee dignified re-employment.”

What sounds like an amnesty proposal, however, is contrary Giovanni Comunale, of the Democratic Party, who expresses appreciation for the checks and seizures carried out by the police. «It is a demonstration of the attention that the administration is paying to the control of the territory – she says – and it is good that the controls continue as we councilors asked the commander in January. We have nothing against illegal workers and it is possible to think about the professional recovery of these workers. It is a different thing to propose a sort of regularization for those who have decided, up to now, to violate all the rules. In a civilized country, squatters cannot be contemplated and tolerated. An amnesty is an old reasoning and no longer suited to the current reality of a city like Caserta which is working seriously to build a profile of a tourist center of excellence in which everyone, even operators who want to make a living from tourism, must evolve and regularize themselves” .
