A new research center was inaugurated today, Thursday 9 May, at the Iuss University School of Pavia: the “International Center on Law, Science and New Technologies (ICLT)”. It is proposed by Amedeo Santosuosso (professor of artificial intelligence, decision-making processes and law) and professors Mario Martina and Nicola Canessa. The center will also deal with: regulation of artificial intelligence; neuroscience, cognitive robots and law; decision-making processes, artificial intelligence and law; biotechnology, medicine and law, sustainable development and governance. “Today we are aware that the knowledge acquired in one sector can be applied in others, revealing deep and unsuspected links between human scientific and social experience – underlines a note from Iuss Pavia -. Digital technologies and artificial intelligence make these links visible, opening up new research and application perspectives. Law, in particular, is deeply involved with artificial intelligence and digital technologies. On the one hand, it regulates the technologicalized social reality; on the other, it questions itself and its transformations from a perspective of great theoretical and practical complexity”. The research center inaugurated today at the Iuss is of an academic nature, but also open to collaboration with private companies; it also takes advantage of synergy with high-level foreign institutions, such as the Codex center at Stanford University. It is a place that enhances interdisciplinarity as a working rule: biologists, neuroscientists, jurists, computer scientists, philosophy and ethics experts collaborate on various projects.
