Holidays at risk for the nursing staff of the Vascular Surgery department of the Policlinico Riuniti of Foggia, given that at present only ten shift workers would be working, one worker not subject to shifts and another figure exempted from working at night. Additionally, four units on pregnancy ban would not be replaced, while another would be on furlough in the summer months.
“The lack of staff not only makes regular monthly shifts with the breaks required by law difficult, but it prevents the authorization of ordinary and extraordinary leaves and increases the workload to the detriment of more efficient care for the sick. This situation has now become chronic and worsens in the summer period, preventing the normal planning of holidays in due time as requested by the company management itself, exposing the worker to significant economic and family hardship” we read in the letter from the nurses delivered to the protocol office addressed to the general, administrative and healthcare directors, the head of human resources, the Sios and the director of Vascular Surgery.
The nurses were supposed to prepare the summer holiday plan no later than April 30th, but evidently the task turned out to be more difficult than expected.
It would seem that a few weeks ago the director of the department Maurizio Ruggieri had already highlighted the impossibility of guaranteeing work shifts and planning the holiday plan. Which is why he had asked to urgently assign two nursing units, which the company would instead be unable to guarantee. The quickest solution for nurses would be to merge with another department.
