Agri-food is the first manufacturing sector in Italy for added value generated, with over 66 billion, more than the production of machinery and equipment (43) and metal products (37). Compared to GDP, the 37 billion generated by agriculture and the 29 by food and beverages represent 3.8% of the total, more than Germany (2.6%) and the United Kingdom (2.1%), less than France (4, 5%) and Spain, the country with the highest incidence (5.2%).

These are some of the data anticipated today in the press conference presenting the 8th edition of the forum ‘The roadmap of the future for Food & beverage’ organized by The European House Ambrosetti, which will be held in Bormio (So) on the 7th and 8th June.

The meeting was attended by The European House Ambrosetti, together with the regional councilor for the mountains and local authorities, Valerio De Molli and Benedetta Brioschi; Giovanni Pomella, Lactalis Italia; Gianluca Giovannetti, Amadori group and Michel Beneventi, San Pellegrino group.

THE RECORDS OF LOMBARDY, VALTELLINA AT THE TOP – In 2022 the Lombardy agri-food chain reached a turnover of 48 billion, with an increase of 34% compared to 2015, confirming its leadership. With a turnover of 2.5 billion euros in certified productions in 2022, + 15% compared to 2021, the region also reaches the Italian record in exports: 10.4 billion euros in 2023, + 84% compared to 2015. The region is third in Italy for the number of certified productions, with 75 between PDO and PGI, and Mantua, Brescia, Cremona, Sondrio and Lodi are among the top 20 in Italy for the value of certified production.

VALTELLINA, THE NUMBERS – A territory of excellence is characterized by some significant data: according to The House Ambrosetti survey, Sondrio is the 3rd Italian province out of 107 for territorial economic impact of certified meat products, after Parma and Udine; with 850 hectares of vineyards and 2,500 km of dry stone walls, Valtellina is the largest terraced vineyard in Italy; finally, it is the 4th Lombardy province for wine production, with 3.2 million bottles a year and 24 million euros in turnover.

“Very positive and continually growing data, those highlighted today – commented the councilor for the Mountains and local authorities – with a trend that is consolidating. And the direction traced is towards quality products, this is what Made in Italy is all about. Valtellina will be a protagonist in the world with the Olympic event, we will have to make the most of it to make known, together with our beauties, the extraordinary products we create”.

DATA ON THE COMPLETE SUPPLY CHAIN ​​– The weight of the extended agri-food supply chain (agriculture, food, distribution and intermediation) is still growing in the Italian economy: it is worth 586.9 billion euros, 8.4% more than in 2021 and + 29% on 2015, and generates almost 335 billion in value, equal to 19% of Italian GDP. “We are the first country in the EU for certified products – recalled De Molli -, 890 in total, 326 from the food world with 8.9 billion euros, and 564 from the wine sector for over 11 billion euros”.
