VARESE – A long process, far too long, according to the political forces of the centre-right, for the appointment of the Guarantor of the rights of children and adolescents of the Municipality of Varese: «It started in the summer of 2022 with the approval of the motion that asked for its establishment, from there a year to make a 3-page regulation and, after that, another 9 months to issue the public notice – report the opposition councilors Barbara Bison, Luca Boldetti, Salvatore Giordano, Roberto Puricelli and Franco Formato – whose deadline was March 26th. Biblical times for such an important figure, it is unacceptable. And the notice was probably also issued thanks to our request to convene a special Commission to take stock of the process which seemed blocked, otherwise perhaps it wouldn’t still be there”.
Silence fell
There were five applications received by the Municipality of Varese, and the scheduled interviews with the Mayor were immediately held: «From there, silence again – the center-right group leaders continue – as if this figure was not really of interest to the administration and was not a priority but, even more seriously, without giving any feedback to the candidates who, rightly, are starting to get impatient. A candidate’s decision to withdraw her availability reflects an atmosphere of growing frustration and impatience. Her choice, completely understandable, highlights a situation that requires a timely and decisive response from the administration.”
Appoint her as soon as possible
The Varese centre-right, therefore, asks for clarity to be made as soon as possible and, above all, for the most suitable figure to fill this important role to be appointed as soon as possible, in the interests of children and young people: «It is fundamental that the appointment of the Guarantor does not be hostage to political disputes or bureaucratic slowdowns. The role itself requires an immediate commitment to children’s rights, without further delay. It would be very serious if, however, for the umpteenth time the center-left did not look at merit but at the party membership card or the ideology of this or that candidate. On this issue we would like Councilor Dimaggio to report to the City Council as soon as possible, because clarity is needed on the situation! It is time to act with determination and responsibility, remembering that the good of young people is an indispensable priority for a civil society that is attentive to the future.”
