Enel and Sfir layoffs, a day of protests

BRINDISI – Since the early morning of Thursday 9 May, the Cobas Union has held a crowded meeting of workers from contracting companies in front of the gates of the Enel power plant in Cerano;

first initiative of the day of protest organized against the 76 dismissals of the company Sir and for alternative investments, which seem to be diverted to other territories while people sleep here.

Cobas’ appeal in the assembly was to build another day of protest starting from the early morning of Wednesday 15 May at the Cerano power station; and then move to Bari where they arrive in procession at the Presidency of the Puglia Region, coinciding with the meeting scheduled for Wednesday 15 May at 2.30 pm at the Regional Task Force on employment led by President Leo Caroli.

The Task Force on Employment has therefore called a meeting on layoffs in Bari for Wednesday 15 May in the presence of Enel.

The assembly was very clear on this, which was then reported in the meeting held with the Mayor of Brindisi, Pino Marchionna, and the Prefect of Brindisi, Luigi Carnevale.

The Cobas Trade Union reported to the Prefect during the meeting that the meeting on May 15th in Bari must include not just a small member but a high representative of Enel, to begin to take stock of the situation.

We also represented the need to alarm the National Government of the need to implement the investments already planned that have taken off, together with social safety nets capable of seeing the arrival of the same investments.
The Prefect of Brindisi was keen to point out that since the first day of his presence in the city the theme of “Work” has been his greatest concern.

He has made a commitment to do what is possible within his competences, contacting interested companies and ministries directly;

all aimed at supporting alternative policies to plant closures, for real support for our territory.

The delegation of SIR workers also made a strong appeal to the Mayor of Brindisi, Pino Brindisi, to urge the national government to return to Brindisi the investments already planned by Enel, which have already taken other paths.

Mayor Marchionna has received a commitment from the National Government to build reindustrialization paths, but the weight of the task seems extremely excessive to be carried out without a Government that seriously invests in our city.

Cobas thanks the prefect of Brindisi, Luigi Carnevale, and the Mayor of Brindisi, Pino Marchionna, for the meetings held while remaining ready for greater popular mobilizations so that this city has some chance of continuing to exist.

Appointment on May 15th.
