On Sunday 26 May at 4pm, at the Pinacoteca Rambaldi (Museum of Villa Luca) in Coldirodi in Sanremo, the exhibition ‘Biodiversity in herbarium’ will be presented, curated by Marco Damele, writer and botanical-floricultural entrepreneur trained at the school of Libereso Guglielmi, who created a biodiversity garden oriented towards the recovery and valorisation of ancient horticultural varieties known to our ancestors but which current fashion and customs have made practically unknown.

The exhibition is open to the public until 23 June and is part of a series of events hosted in the splendid Rambaldi art gallery which, thanks to the voluntary work of the ACLI and with the concession of the Municipality of Sanremo, reopened its doors from September 2023 after years of closure to the public. This is an original exhibition that will present a rare and unprecedented collection of herbariums, testimony to European biodiversity from 1800 to the present day. Part of the exhibition will be dedicated to local essences that have been collected, classified and studied by Damele himself and which highlight how plants have a multiple role in our lives linked not only to decorative use, but also as a tool to promote well-being human and our ecosystem, enhancing the cultural heritage of a territory.

In the opening seminar on May 26, Damele will present the research that has oriented his company to recover horticultural varieties of which traces had been lost, first of all the Ligurian Egyptian onion (Allium cepa viviparum), which in a short time has become precious and authentic witness to the biodiversity of Western Liguria. Attention will be paid to the meaning of a herbarium which is not just a simple collection of plants preserved in a dry state, but which has a historical, scientific and applicative significance for obtaining information on the uses of plants in various food, therapeutic and timber fields. , for fiber, for drugs, and more.

The exhibition is open during the opening hours of the Rambaldi Art Gallery: Friday 9am-12pm, Saturday 9am-12pm and 3pm-6pm and Sunday 3pm-6pm. Access is in accordance with the entrance fee established by the Pinacoteca itself.
