Inclusivity in children’s services of the Municipality of Siena, guidelines

Inclusivity in children’s services: the Siena City Council, meeting this morning, Thursday 6 May, approved the development, by December 2024, of a guideline document on the topic “0-6 services as laboratories of inclusiveness”, the result of a synergy between the Municipality of Siena and the research team belonging to the Department of Social, Political and Cognitive Sciences (Dispoc) of the University of Siena, in continuity and implementation of the provisions of the “Inclusion 2030 Project” approved in March 2023. A special working group will be created to draft the document.

With the “Inclusion 2030″ project, a collaborative relationship was established between the municipal administration and the Dispoc of the University of Siena, aimed at clarifying the innovative teaching practices and tacit models of inclusive pedagogy characterizing municipal nursery schools. of Siena. During 2023, research and classroom teaching activities were carried out with the preparation of materials, ongoing monitoring, evaluation and verification activities, dissemination of results and a final report. “Inclusion 2030” was completed on time and with the expected results and the results of the research were presented last December 5th at the conference “Innovation processes in nursery schools. Inclusion 2030: nursery schools as laboratories of inclusiveness” held at the Santa Maria della Scala Museum Complex.

In order to optimize the results of the research, a document will be developed containing guidelines on the topic of “0-6 services as laboratories of inclusiveness”, in synergy with part of the research team belonging to the Dispoc of the University of Siena. The document intends to contribute to raising awareness among citizens on the issues of inclusion, with particular attention to the promotion of educational and scholastic inclusion processes of boys and girls with special educational needs and their families. The guidelines are to be understood as a participatory charter, the result of cooperation between several social actors in different capacities involved in the life of the 0-6 year old educational communities, also aiming to act as an opportunity for dialogue between local public entities interested in the topic of ‘inclusion.

For the preparation of the document, therefore, a working group will be created which will involve the educators of municipal nursery schools and nursery schools, the municipal administration, the children’s parents and some members of the Dispoc research team . It is also expected to involve in the work some qualified representatives of public institutions interested in the topic of inclusion.

The results of the inclusiveness project in children’s services, explains the Municipality of Siena, will be presented in the framework of a conference aimed at citizens which will take place, approximately, in autumn 2024.
