Region, proposed law on the “Typical restaurant of Molise” logo

CAMPOBASSO – Councilors Quintino Pallante, Stefania Passarelli and Armandino D’Egidio presented a regional law proposal on “Enhancement of the Molise food and wine culture – Establishment of the typical Molise restaurant logo”.

“In the awareness – the presenters explain in the report accompanying the proposed text – that tourism that is increasingly aware of our food and wine riches is spreading in Molise, the Region must protect restaurateurs who with great difficulty, after the years of the pandemic and in full energy crisis, offer their guests genuine products, respectful of sustainability and the environment, but also of consumers’ health. The Region – it is noted again in the report -, which has always been close to producers and restaurateurs, wants to encourage the conservation and transmission of food and wine culture, to strengthen the link between typical products and the territories from which they come. To achieve this objective, the role of restaurateurs is fundamental, because they are the ones who act as intermediaries between consumers and the extraordinary food and wine excellences of Molise. The text presented, therefore, tries to accommodate the requests received from the trade associations which have highlighted the need for a regulatory intervention aimed at valorising the Molise excellences which also and above all pass through the food and wine tradition. The proposed initiatives, in fact, are aimed at giving recognition to typical catering establishments to support and encourage their action.

The article, therefore, provides that the Region establishes a logo called “Typical restaurant of Molise” whose use concession lies with the Presidency of the Regional Council, which together with the main trade associations, adopts a regulation that governs the use and control. The restaurateurs who will be entitled to use the logo will be registered in a specific continuously updated register kept at the Presidency of the Regional Legislative Assembly.

“The use of the “Typical restaurant of Molise” logo will be permitted – we read in the text – to catering operators who, in compliance, demonstrate possession of the following merit requirements:

a) Use of at least one of the following product categories: a1. agri-food products classified and recognized as DOP, IGP, DOC and DOCG; a2. products from organic farming or belonging to the so-called Slow Food Presidia; a3. Products that have obtained the de.co. designation. (municipal name) for the protection and valorisation of traditional local products.

b) Enhancement of the “short supply chain” through: b1. the identification, including quantitative, of the ingredients used; b2. the identification of the geographical origin of suppliers or producers;

c) Enhancement of consumer information on territorial quality ascertainable through: c1. the provision of menus and wine lists that contain explicit information on the preparation of the dishes and their actual composition; c2. the provision of information relating to the places of production of the foods used as well as on the historical aspects linked to traditional local productions.

d) The use of the products is aimed at enhancing the typical recipes of the Molise culinary tradition.

In order to spread the Molise food and wine culture and the “Typical restaurateur of Molise” logo, the establishment of the “Molisan food and wine culture week” is planned, during which events and workshops will be organised.”

The proposed law now passes to the Permanent Commission which deals with the matter which, after the investigation and the expression of the competent opinion, will send it to the Regional Council for the final decisions.
