Italy needs more Mattarella and less Tarquinio

President Mattarella gave a committed speech to the UN General Assembly, in which he addressed international crisis situations on the merits. On Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, he clarified that it is not a question of seeking peace at all costs, which would end up rewarding the aggressor, thus creating a dangerous and unacceptable precedent, also because it is contrary to the principles of respect for the sovereignty of the states that they are the basis of the UN. Mattarella explained that giving in to the aggressor does not end the war but causes others that are even more devastating: he therefore clearly contrasted himself with the unprincipled “pacifists”, those, so to speak, like Tarquinio, who just yesterday in an interview with Repubblica had argued that the Ukrainians should have responded to the Russian occupation with “nonviolence”, that is, they should have given in without reacting. Also on the Gaza crisis, Mattarella recalled that it was caused by the ignoble assault of Hamas and that it can be resolved in the logic of the two statesprovided that the countries bordering Israel recognize its right to security and there is no support for terrorist groups.

He also dedicated part of his speech to contesting the thesis of a contrast between the North and the South of the world, which tends to delegitimize the participation of the West in an action aimed at overcoming economic and social differences and, in this context, he valorised Italy’s efforts to establish relations with Africa that respect the interests and needs of those countries, along the lines of the “Mattei plan”. He valorized the role of multilateral organizations, such as the UN, without hiding the problems of effectiveness of this institution. A speech in which the intent to underline an Italian desire to collaborate on the international horizon was evident, without any temptation of sovereign isolation or escape from the sphere of defense of the freedoms and rights of peoples.
