«On June 2nd in Rome we are mobilized for the Constitution, for federal Europe, against the premiership and differentiated autonomy». Elly Schlein launches the challenge (again) to Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. She does it on the sidelines of the opening of Nicola Zingaretti’s electoral campaign at the Monk in Rome, a place that certainly brings her good fortune: there Elly officially ran for leadership of the Dems in 2022. Elly calls on her, for Republic Day, to “build a wall” with “our bodies” against a reform accused of “upsetting the structure of the Constitution”. And he speaks of a “sordid exchange” in the center-right, an exchange “that keeps the government afloat”. While responding remotely to the prime minister – who had accused the opposition of lacking arguments – she adds: «We brought them to the meeting with the government, the only one that took place more than a year ago. They never wanted dialogue.” In any case, «it’s useless for you to attack me, it doesn’t scare us. We will oppose with all our strength this dangerous reform which weakens democracy and makes a mockery of citizens.” As mentioned, Elly is in Rome to present Zingaretti’s candidacy for the next European elections. She does not set any bar next to the one who led the Dems during the last European elections, in 2019. Schlein retraces the choice of lists, built by opening up to “civil society and the forces of our party. It is my responsibility – as the leader in the Center and in the Islands – to take the lead.”

Meloni on the premiership: «The reform is a risk, but I’m not backing down»

The duel

But then the long-distance challenge with Giorgia Meloni continues even when the topic is the future of the European Union, where “we need political weight and vision”. While “on the other hand they reduce the electoral program to a name”, she states, recalling Meloni’s choice to give voters the opportunity to write only “Giorgia” on the ballot paper and present themselves like this on the electoral posters.
After the institutional reforms, it is the turn of school and healthcare: “They have chosen to dismantle the public school, which is a social lift for us.” Schlein calls for a citizenship reform, “because 70 percent of foreign students are born in Italy” and investments to multiply nursery schools.
Then he adds: «Giorgia Meloni never responded to me about the proposed five-month parental leave for both parents. They did it in Spain, they are doing it in France.” In his speech, Schlein once again relaunches the proposal for a common battle with the opposition on the issue of healthcare and goes further, proposing at European level «a common agency for vaccines and life-saving drugs, to remove them from the logic of profit» . And again, he asks for a “law on caregivers” and “more money for mental health: young people and university students ask me for it”. To the point of saying that “the only thing the government did for healthcare was to let objectors enter the clinics.”

The minimum wage

While the other issue of conflict with the government (and of past convergences with the opposition) is that of the minimum wage: “Below 9 euros is exploitation”, he says from the Monk stage, before talking about the proposal born from the young dems and supported by the secretariat: «We must abolish free internships because you don’t pay our rent and you don’t build a future. And in Europe «thanks to the socialists» proposals along these lines have been put forward on both these fronts. And, again, the passage on the environment, avoiding conflicts with the business world: «Going back on the Green deal will not deny us the climate emergency but the companies that have been able to adapt to new needs have been rewarded», while the «farmers (among the most active in the protests, ed.) are the first victims of climate change.”
Finally, alongside the then Minister of Economy (and now mayor of Rome) Roberto Gualtieri, Schlein once again attacks the right, citing the path that led during the pandemic to the Next Generation Eu, a provision on which at the time “they had abstained” . While today, on the contrary, the fact remains that it is difficult to build a stronger Europe “if the common budget amounts to just one percent of European GDP”.
