“A good news”. As Matteo Falcinelli’s mother, Vlasta Studenicova, commented to ANSA on the statements of the US State Department on the case of her son’s arrest. Studenicova, with the help of the Italian consulate, is making contact with some lawyers. “The consulate has already heard from one of the lawyers who dealt with George Floyd’s case. Another lawyer from Los Angeles contacted Matteo directly and yesterday we heard from him”, added Studenicova.
Studenicova said she was surprised by Matteo’s father, who did not make any statements, leaving everything to diplomacy. “It’s a statement that any person who reads newspapers could have made,” she said.
“We recognize the concerns raised by the Italian government and the Falcinelli family regarding the circumstances of the arrest of Matteo Falcinelli in Miami. We understand that the Miami police have opened an internal investigation into this case. We will continue to monitor these developments”: he said a spokesperson for the US State Department told ANSA, responding to a question about the violent arrest of the Italian student. It is the first official reaction from the US government after the controversy over the case.
The US State Department, the spokesperson explained, “works diligently to ensure that US law enforcement agencies comply with their legal obligations regarding notification and consular access when foreign nationals are detained in the United States, in accordance with national law applicable and in accordance with international obligations, in the same manner that we expect foreign governments to treat U.S. citizens abroad.”

Tajani, satisfied with the US’s words on Falcinelli
“I read with satisfaction the statements made today in the United States: the federal government is following the matter with concern, therefore it responded positively to our request for clarification”. The Foreign Minister, Antonio Tajani, said this when speaking about the Matteo Falcinelli affair. According to Tajani, “the words that come from Washington go into the declaration we requested, to protect the young Italian arrested in February in ways that I didn’t like at all”. “I noticed – he added – that they distanced themselves in a timely manner”.
