PADUA – Four construction sites will be opened within the year Carrara castlea circumstance that will allow 80 percent of the redevelopment of theformer prisonallowing Paduans and tourists, by 2027, to admire works by contemporary or 14th century artists, together with masters of design, while having lunch in an exclusive restaurant.

«We are at a turning point – says the Councilor for Culture Andrea Colasio who followed every phase of the process – all the construction sites are starting and I am sure that within three years we will return this historic asset to the enjoyment of the people of Padua”.

THE SOUTH SIDE
Proceeding in temporal and spatial order we can say that the councilor had a resolution approved the other day in the council which incorporates a change in costs for the completion of the south wing, the one overlooking the Tiso da Camposampiero riviera which will be dedicated to collect works of design (the Bortolussi collection awaits for example and the creations of the masters of the Padua goldsmith school). The amount rises to 4.3 million euros, or 767 thousand euros more than the previous one. «The contract with the companies was signed in 2020 when the crisis broke out. Then we had the price hikes and the wars. Now the ministry, which finances the operation, has agreed to let us use the money from the auction discount and has also provided other funds to cover it. So in mid-June the construction site starts again.” To complete it, 2 million are needed for the systems and another 2 for the external areas. Here the Foundation has invested 1.5 million euros.

THE NORTH WING
Looking at the castle it is the one on the right. The works were awarded to the Lares company which is making the executive project which should be ready next week. The Superintendency has already approved it with some prescriptions. The works are financed by the Pnrr with 5.3 million plus 300 thousand euros from the Municipality. And they include the restoration of two floors and the stairs. The ground floor and the installation of the windows on the facade remain outside, for which 2 million are needed to be requested from Rome. It will house the fourteenth-century Carrarese museum on the ground and the large rooms dedicated to contemporary art above. It is the strategic part of the Castle with the most significant frescoed cycles, dating back to seven centuries ago, in cell 77, but all the doors of the cells will open for a narrative journey.

THE EAST SIDE
It concerns the entrance, therefore the ticket office and the recovery of the fragments of frescoes. «The tender for the works will start by June, perhaps already at the beginning of next month, in order to have the award by the summer and start the works by the end of the year». The cost is 5 million, 2 allocated by the ministry, 2.5 by the Cariparo Foundation, 365 thousand by the Presidency of the Council and the rest by the Municipality. The executive project was approved by the Council in December 2023. The ticket office will be located in the former shop. The pictorial cycles on the ground floor will be restored and put on view, there will be an exhibition itinerary on the artistic-cultural history of Padua up to the Group N of the twentieth century which will be added to those on the North side and the historical stratification will be highlighted”. THE BAR RESTAURANT
The fourth construction site will be carried out by a private individual who has already expressed his willingness to restore a nineteenth-century building near the south wing. It is located between the surrounding wall and a warehouse of the former prison, distributed on two levels. Once installed, it will serve the museum area as a refreshment point intended as a bar and restaurant. «In short, a magical place, with the addition of a square, a small auditorium, a library and workshops for children».
