Foggia. A packed and jubilant council chamber was recorded this afternoon at Palazzo di Città for the “Pport Excellence – first round” event. In fact, 96 athletes from various sports disciplines were awarded in the Municipality. This is a first appointment, wanted by the sports department led by Domenico Di Molfetta to present and make known to the city the outstanding results, with national level excellence both in individual and team sports, which were obtained by Foggiani in these first months of the 2024 sports season.
A sort of number zero of an event which it is the will of the Episcopal Administration to consolidate and make a fixed appointment, to recognize the right value to the meritorious commitment, accompanied by successes, of hundreds of Foggia athletes of different ages, in sporting activities that they don’t always manage to get the headlines they deserve.
Acting as testimonials for this first event are two recognized national excellences of city sport: the car driver Lucio Peruggini, several times Italian Gran Turismo champion, and the saber Olympian Martina Criscio.
“Today is an involuntary but significant coincidence – remarked Councilor Di Molfetta during his introductory speech. QThis demonstration comes at the same time when the whole city is worried about the fate of the football team. As an Administration we are tirelessly committed to ensuring the sporting continuity of Foggia Calcio, but at the same time today, as a city, we pay due recognition to these athletes, who carry the name of Foggia high and who work and often make sacrifices that are certainly no less to those of other more celebrated sports.”
“Every victory, every podium and every recognition won – says the mayor Maria Aida Episcopo – it is an achievement that honors our community. It is proof that with passion and determination you can overcome all challenges. Our city’s applause and gratitude go to all the athletes in our city, their coaches, their families and all those who support them. The example of these girls and boys must be a beacon of hope and pride for all of Foggia.”
At the event, alongside the awarded athletes, were also the managers of sports clubs and representatives of sports federations, promotion bodies and CONI.
The sports taken into consideration in this first appointment are: athletics; motoring; basketball; women’s soccer; gymnastics; karate; struggle; I swim; boxing; chess; fencing; taewkondo; archery. Awards also for the athletes who achieved results in the Paralympic disciplines.
