Veneto: Fishing in crisis, but employment growing

Despite its privileged coastal position, Veneto faces a negative trade balance in the fishing sector. However, positive signs emerge from employment, with a significant increase in employees.

Veneto fights against the trade deficit but invests in sustainable fishing

SI import more and more fish from abroad into Italy. This news is somewhat surprising if you consider that the country is surrounded by the sea and is a thin strip of land, compared to other European countries. Yet, in 2023, the trade balance recorded a negative balance of 158 million euros and, unfortunately, Veneto is perfectly in line with this trend. Over the last 10 years, the Venetian maritime fleet has seen a decline in operational fishing vessels of almost 13% compared to the previous decade.

Despite this, the sector shows positive signs regarding employment. In fact, there was a 32.8% increase in employees last year compared to 2014. This means that the profession is still attractive and for this reason, today, the Veneto region announced the allocation of 8 million euros of community funds to coastal action groups of the Po Delta, Chioggia and Venice.

The local action plans were presented today during a press conference called at the Legacoop Veneto headquarters in Marghera by the GAC FLAGs. The latter aim to finance sustainable fishing, farming, conserve biological resources and develop the processing of fishery products.
