James Ellroy, American writer and master of the noir genre, will be in Florence to present the new novel “Gli incantatori” (Einaudi). On Monday 13 May at 6.30 pm at the Giunti Odeon cinema bookshop (Piazza Strozzi) the author of cult titles including “LA Confidential” and “Dalia nera” will be a guest of La città dei readers, a cultural project organized by the CR Firenze Foundation and the Association Wimbledon APS with the direction of Gabriele Ametrano. In the latest work, which he will introduce to the public in dialogue with the journalist Gianni Santucci, Ellroy returns to investigate the darkest folds of American history starting from an illustrious death that from 1962 to today he has not yet stopped talking about: that of Marilyn Monroe. In Los Angeles it is a sultry night when Marilyn dies of an overdose and loneliness. The same day the police free a starlet who had been kidnapped. Is there a connection between the two stories? After the meeting, at 9.00 pm, the screening of “LA Confidential”, a two-Oscar winning film based on the novel of the same name starring Kim Basinger, Russell Crowe, Guy Pierce and Kevin Spacey and directed by Curtis Hanson, is scheduled. The evening is in collaboration with Giunti Odeon (presentation with free admission while seats last, info www.lacittadeilettori.it).

After Ian McEwan and Bret Easton Ellis The City of Readers brings another great name in international literature to Florence. At the center of the new novel is the ferocious and controversial figure of Freddy Otash, one of the most famous private investigators in the United States, who over the years has provided compromising first-hand information on movie stars such as Frank Sinatra, Lana Turner, Bette Davis and Marilyn Monroe . And precisely for having spied on Marilyn on behalf of Jimmy Hoffa, the controversial head of the truckers’ union, in “The Charmers” the police task him with investigating her death. A delicate thing, because people very high up in Washington could have something to do with the disappearance of the most famous actress in the world. For some obscure reason, which perhaps has to do with love, Freddy decides to go through with it. Even at the cost of shattering an icon, even at the cost of turning the dream of the city of angels into a nightmare.
